Where you choose to live in San Diego will depend on which military base you’re stationed at. If you were to be stationed at the military bases in North Count Coastal San Diego like Camp Pendleton you would probably be looking at communities like Oceanside, Carlsbad, Vista or San Marcos. If you were being relocated to a base like Miramar that is very centrally located in San Diego then areas like Mira Mesa, Scripps Ranch, Poway or Rancho Penasquitos may be an easy commute. We have helped many military families move to areas in Chula Vista like, Eastlake and Otay Ranch for Sailors and Marines stationed at 32 Street and bases on Coronado.

Much of the home buying location, for a lot of families, depends on commute times to and from the bases. Some areas of San Diego can get backed up on the freeways during rush hour commutes so being closer to the base may be advantageous. Casabella at Renaissance in University City La Jolla

Casabella at Renaissance is a gated community in the heart of University City 92122. Casabella are attached homes categorized by agents as condos, townhomes, twin homes and a few others. Essentially condominiums, very upscale condominiums. They are 3 to 4 bedroom properties ranging from the mid to upper 2,000 square feet range. Many of them are spectacular with a multitude of upgrades. They also have a large 2 car garage and lots of guest parking.

These condos are walking distance to shopping and dining in the area and is a short stroll over to the University Towne Center or UTC Shopping Mall. Imperial Beach is the southernmost beach community in San Diego California. It’s located South Bay San Diego just north of the border with Mexico, just west of Otay Mesa and San Ysidro and just south of Coronado. Imperial Beach has a nice beach that stretches from the Silver Strand in Coronado to the Border Field State Park. Seacoast Drive is the main road that runs from north to south on the beach strip of Imperial Beach. The Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge is at the mouth of the Tijuana River in south Imperial Beach.

The iconic Imperial Beach Pier is ever present on the beach and has a nice casual restaurant at the very end called Tin Fish. There’s fishing off of the pier as well and it’s a great place to take a stroll. Imperial Beach is the most south western point in the continental United States.

Plumeria in San Diego

I love going to Hawaii. As a family we go there usually about once a year to enjoy everything the islands have to offer. Living in San Diego allows us a quick 5 hour flight from the San Diego Airport or LAX to any of the Hawaiian Island airports. We’ve been to The Big Island “Hawaii”, Oahu, Maui and Kauai many times over the years. We usually go to The Big Island because we like it there the best.

One of the things I like most about Hawaii is the plant life. The flowers, trees, palms, coconuts and everything that grows there. My favorite tree is the Plumeria which is not a native Hawaiian species but has its origins in the Caribbean, South America and Central America. The first plumeria was introduced in Hawaii by Wilhelm Hillebrand in 1860. Wilhelm Hillebrand was a German physician and botanist who lived in Hawaii from 1851 to 1871. This tree is covered in flowers and has a wonder pungent perfume smell. They come in a multitude of colors. These trees along with ginger and other sweet smelling plants give the islands a wonderful flowery smell.

In San Diego I’ve grown plumeria over the years in my backyard and have been quite successful doing so. I’ve also listed and sold many homes with plumeria trees in the yards of the property. They can do quite well in San Diego County especially by the San Diego Coast. This last trip to Hawaii I brought home several clippings of plumeria. I found this deep red plumeria and an orange-red with yellow highlights plumeria and took home a few stalks to plant at home and see if I can grow these into my own trees over the next several years. I researched the best way to do this and along with my knowledge of plants that I have accumulated over the years I planted them.

I went to Home Depot and purchased Perlite and Miracle-Gro Potting Mix. I mixed them together in a wheelbarrow in a 2-1 mix 2 parts potting mix and 1 part perlite. I mixed this very well and then put it into 4 pots that I had from some berry bushes I purchased and planted earlier in the year. I put the stalks of the plumeria into the soil broken end down. I mixed water and “Root & Grow” root stimulator and watered thoroughly. I have the plants in a 50/50 sun/shade location. This usually works excellent for me and I’ll keep this blog updated with the progress.
