Pio Pico is a Thousand Trails Campground in Jamul San Diego just east of Chula Vista.

Pio Pico is a great RV getaway spot in the San Diego back country. It is located on 180 acres on the old Rancho Jamul and was at one time an Army base and then part of the California Conservation Corps. Some friends called us up and asked us if we wanted to go with them to Pio Pico and we said, O.K. We borrowed their trailer that they kept in storage at Pio Pico and hooked it up to my SUV. It slept 4 comfortably and I got a spot about 200 yards from where they had their RV parked. We had a great weekend and a time I’ll never forget. The kids even had fun and can’t wait to go back. Cookouts and smores on the campfire were two of the great family times we had. We did lots of hiking in the back country that you can read about in my next post.PIO PICO MAP

San Diego Hiking in the South Bay

San Diego has many hiking trails from the San Diego Beaches to the San Diego Mountains.

I recently spent a weekend at the Thousand Trails Campground in Jamul about 10 minutes east of EastLake off of Otay Lakes Road. The campground is called Pio Pico and is surrounded by mountains and hiking that was incredible. Going in early spring was a good idea because it wasn’t too hot or too cold and the seasonal rivers were still flowing although just a little. I went hiking the first day with a friend of mine that I was camping with. We hiked through a beautiful green valley with large Scrub Oaks and knee high dark green grass. We walked up the seasonal river bed between two mountain peaks. This made the hike easier because it was mostly rocks and boulders and also made it very cool because it was shady in many areas.

As we started our climb we saw the colorful flowers and fresh plant growth that sprung to life from the rains after the destruction from the San Diego wildfires. It was incredible. As we hiked higher up the trail we noticed that this area was a likely spot where illegal immigrants crossed into America. We found hundreds of plastic bottles with Mexican labels, canned tuna and snacks with Mexican labels, nap sacks, and discarded clothing and a clear trail along the seasonal river bank. I could be wrong but we surmised this to be signs of illegal immigration and with the Border Patrol saturation in this area I think we were right.

We climbed to the top of the mountain and took some great pictures and had a great talk about life. Hiking and nature seem to always get one connected with what’s most important in life. We hiked on down the trail and found a few more interesting things along the way.

The next day I hiked solo up a different seasonal river bed further east. I found a great area with staggered pools of water and one I soaked my feet in and boy was that water cold. I found some Indian pottery in a crevice between some rocks and looked at it but put it back where I found it. I saw deer tracks as well which made me feel good that there were still some in the area. One day I’ll check out the old gold mines in the area and post about my adventures there. San Diego back country is fun and exciting and if you like the outdoors you’ll love San Diego.

San Diego Fires Create Back Country Flower Extravaganza

San Diego Wildflowers

The San Diego Fires of 2007 devastated the San Diego back country. Anything in its path was either destroyed, charred are went up in smoke. I recently stayed at Pio Pico in East County San Diego very close to South Bay San Diego. This area was hit by the Harris Fire in 2007, which burned over 90,000 acres. It started on Harris Ranch, east of Jamul, on October 21, 2007 and was fully contained on October 31st. The Harris Fire killed 10 people, wounded 61 people, destroyed 253 homes, and caused $21,000,000 worth of damage.

During my recent visit to the Pio Pico camp site in Jamul I went on several hikes and was impressed with how fast the San Diego back country has recovered from the fires wrath. This post is a continuation from “Thousand Trails Pio Pico in Jamul San Diego” and the one after this post will have more information on the Pio Pico Campground and my adventures there. This post is specific to the many species of wildflowers in the back country of San Diego County. I’m not a botanist so I can’t name the types of flowers I saw but I can tell you they were beautiful and abundant. I think maybe the fire had something to do with the explosion of color that has covered the fields, valleys, meadows and mountains of San Diego.

Some of the species I saw, after looking them up were; Stinging Lupine, Morning Glory, Lemonade Berry, Wooly Indian Paintbrush, Brush Poppy, California Poppy, San Diego Gilia, Our Lord’s Candle, Blue Dicks, Baby Blue Eyes, Miniature Lupine, Artemisia Pincushion, and many more I can’t identify. This web site has some great information on the San Diego wild flower species. I have been in the San Diego back country many times over many years and I have never seen the woods and fields so filled with colors. The pictures on this post are of some of the flowers I saw in late March 2008 in the Jamul Mountains. Imperial Beach Real Estate Prices Fall Again in 2008

Imperial Beach 91932 in South Bay San Diego had another drop in real estate prices in January 2008.

The home prices dropped 6.8% from January 2007 to January 2008. The peak year of 2005 had a median home price of $515,000. Compared to the January 2008 median home price of $405,000 there is a median home price drop of $110,000 from the 2005 level. The median home price in 2007 for Imperial Beach was $451,000. The trend is continuing down and should continue do to foreclosures and short sales in the area.

There were 7 homes that closed escrow in January 2008. Currently in late March there are 59 homes for sale in Imperial Beach with a median list price of $558,773. There are 11 home in escrow with a median list price of $357,636 and will set the new bottom of the market for Imperial Beach when and if they close escrow. So far in 2008 15 homes have closed escrow with a median sold price of $515,060. One of the 15 homes sold was close to 2 million dollars on Seacoast Drive. If this home is taken out of the stats the median sold home price is $415,350.

There were 3 condos sold in Imperial Beach in January 2008 with a median price of $228,000. This number is down by 32.4% from January 2007. There were 3 new properties, “homes and condos” that sold in January 2008 with a median home price of $307,500 which is up 9.8% from the January 2007 number.
