Carlsbad is south of Oceanside, west of Vista, Oceanside and San Marcos, north of Encinitas and east of the Pacific Ocean. The northern coastal border of Carlsbad is Buena Vista Lagoon at the 78. The southern coastal border is the Batiquitos Lagoon State Marine Conservation Area at La Costa Avenue. The Agua Hedionda Lagoon is in the middle of coastal Carlsbad just north of Cannon Road.
Northeast Carlsbad – ZIP Code 92010
Borders Vista and Oceanside and is just north of Palomar Airport Road once you pass El Camino Real. El Camino Real divides northwest and northeast Carlsbad with 92010 to the east and 92008 to the west.
Northwest Carlsbad – ZIP Code 92008
The Village of Carlsbad or Downtown Carlsbad is located in this area. This is where Carlsbad was first settled. Legoland and The Crossings are in this area.
Southeast Carlsbad – ZIP Code 92009
La Costa is also in 92009. Lots of newer master planned communities in this area, many new homes and recent real estate development.
Southwest Carlsbad – ZIP Code 92011
McClellan Palomar Airport is located in this ZIP Code and is in the northeast corner of the ZIP Code. Runs from El Camino Real in the east all the way to the Carlsbad beaches.
The early history of Carlsbad like all areas of San Diego starts with the Native Americans. Spanish explorers and missionaries followed El Camino Real which splits down the middle the modern day Carlsbad we know of today. The first Europeans came to Carlsbad in 1769 with the Spanish Portolà expedition.
Carlsbad was named after the Bohemian town of Karlsbad in the Czech Republic from a well that was dug by settler John Frazier which had qualities similar to the Spa in Bohemia. Gerhard Schutte, Samuel Church Smith, Henry Nelson and D.D. Wadsworth formed the Carlsbad Land and Mineral Company and formed the town of Carlsbad.
