According to a recent survey by the Bank of America 2016 Homebuyer Insights Report and a very telling graphic by the California Association of Realtors the answer is yes. San Diego home buyers from our experience say that the school that their children will go to when they buy a home is at the top of the list. It’s also not just the school that their children are currently going to. Parents look at all of the schools including; elementary, middle and high schools.
Potential home buyers are saying; when it comes time to purchase a home, school districts and proximity of house to school are ruling the home search for parents.
More than 75% of parents say their child’s education is an important part of the search for a new home, of those 53% will buy a new home in a specific neighborhood to get their child into a better school.
Timing of the Real Estate Purchase
More than 25% of parents state that they will plan to move to a new home during school breaks.
To Parents Quality Matters
64% of parents say that quality or ranking of schools is extremely important when purchasing a new home.
37% of parents say that the schools extracurricular reputation is very important.
Location of the Schools
34% of parents believe close distance to the school is extremely important.
22% of parents say that the ability for their children to walk to school is very important.
I also agree that for my wife and I schools are extremely important for us when we look to purchase a home in San Diego County. Even now that the kids are no longer in school the value of real estate is affected by the schools and school district that the property is attached to so the decision about where we buy will always have the “School District” in the home buying decision. It’s part of the community and should be a factor when buying in a community.
