People are Moving Less

People are Moving Less

Americans are moving at the lowest rate on record.

Why? Compared with earlier generations of young adults Millennials are moving significantly less.

Percent of 25 to 35 year olds who moved in the previous year:

  • Millennials in 2016: 20%
  • Gen Xers in 2000: 26%
  • Late Boomers in 1990: 27%
  • Early Boomers in 1981: 25%
  • Silents in 1963: 26%

Percent of 25 to 35 year old movers who were living in owner occupied homes following their move:

  • Millennials in 2016: 22%
  • Gen Xers in 2000: 34%
  • Late Boomers in 1990: 29%
  • Early Boomers in 1981: 35%

Percent of 25 to 35 year old movers who were living in rental property following their move:

  • Millennials in 2016: 74%
  • Gen Xers in 2000: 62%
  • Late Boomers in 1990: 67%
  • Early Boomers in 1981: 61%

From looking at this data it seems to me that it may be more a sign of the times than it is the choices of the Millennials. The economy and job market over the past 8 years has not been good. Many Millennials have not been able to find good jobs after they graduate from college. It’s hard to qualify for a loan if you don’t have a good job and have amassed student loans.
