The Chula Vista Nature Center is one of Chula Vista’s finest examples of nature conservancy. The David A. Wergeland Shark & Ray Experience is the Center’s newest exhibit. Replacing the ever-popular shark and ray petting pool, this state-of-the-art super aquarium includes a shallow-water “touch tank” where visitors can get “up close and personal” with sharks and rays, and a deep water free-swimming area for larger sharks and rays. The exhibit interprets the importance of coastal wetlands and the need for all of us to be custodians of our natural environment. In 1997, funding from the San Diego County Fish and Wildlife Advisory Commission and the San Diego Fly Fishers allowed the Nature Center to construct its only freshwater aquarium exhibit. This exhibit describes the descent of Rainbow Trout from the headwaters of the Sweetwater River at Green Valley Falls, through San Diego Bay to the ocean where they once physiologically changed to Steelhead. Until 1888, when the Sweetwater Dam was built, the Steelhead were able to return to their traditional spawning grounds. Now, the local native Rainbow Trout are unable to make their migration. As you approach the glowing blue cylindrical aquarium, you will stop, entranced by gracefully undulating moon jellies. This jellyfish lives in quiet bays and estuaries and poses little danger to man.
