San Diego MLS San Diego Real Estate by Communities Chula Vista is the second largest city in San Diego County and second only to the City of San Diego. Chula Vista covers a huge tract of land. It starts at the Chula Vista Marina and goes east until the base of the mountains in Jamul. Commute time from older Downtown Chula Vista to Downtown San Diego is about 10 to 15 minutes with no traffic. Commute time from new parts of Chula Vista Like EastLake can take 25 to 30 minutes to Downtown San Diego with no traffic. The new route 125 should make the commute to newer parts of Chula Vista much shorter. Chula Vista is East of the San Diego Bay and the Coronado Strand, West of Jamul, North of Otay Mesa and San Ysidro and South of National City and Bonita. Chula Vista incorporated as The City of Chula Vista in 1911. Before 1911 Chula Vista was Ranch Land until 1855 when John Forster sold his Ranch "Rancho de la Nacion" to a developer who then sold it to the Kimball brothers in 1868 for $30,000. Chula Vista was only part of the massive ranch that Forster had owned. National City was also part of the "Rancho de la Nacion" purchase and once things got going there the Kimball Brothers broke ground in Chula Vista and started selling 5 acre lots for $300 each in 1887. The name Chula Vista means beautiful view in Spanish and was suggested to the San Diego Land and Town Company by James Schulyer a local resident. Chula Vista has recently and still is under a new home development boom. A large portion of Chula Vista remained ranchland and kept up by a local rancher named Jerry. A drive out to Jamul took you down Otay Lakes Road through miles and miles of ranchland dotted with herds of cattle then passed the Otay Lakes. All of this area is now EastLake, Otay Ranch, Rolling Hills Ranch, and San Miguel Ranch. It was a vision of Henry Fenton when he purchased the 3,000 acre lima bean farm in 1931. EastLake broke ground in 1985 and the start of the new real estate boom in Chula Vista was on the horizon. There are so many beautiful master planned communities in Chula Vista. Some of them are, EastLake which includes, EastLake Shores, Eastlake Hills, EastLake Greens, Eastlake Trails, EastLake Woods, EastLake Vistas, and EastLake Summit, others like Windingwalk, Otay Ranch, Lomas Verdes, Sunbow, San Miguel Ranch, Rolling Hills Ranch and so many more. Every community has different unique qualities about them. Many of the new home communities still have many new homes for sale and some are just now breaking ground or will be in the future. They were wandering nomads called the Kumeyaay and many of their descendents still live in Chula Vista and San Diego today. The Kumayaay lived in tribes and most of the Indian tribes lived in peace for hundreds of years. They lived off the fertile land, hunted the wildlife and fished. The Spanish Conquistadores arrived in the Chula Vista area in 1542 lead by Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. The Spanish set sail from Spain to find riches in the new world. They sailed into which is now San Diego Harbor and declared the area for the King of Spain. Cabrillo named the area San Miguel and left the area to explore more of the Pacific Coast. In 1602 Sebastian Vizcaino another Spanish Explorer returned to San Miguel and renamed it San Diego in honor of San Diego de Alcalá Heneras, a Franciscan. In the last part of the 1700's there was a missionary invasion of what is now Baja California, Mexico and Southern California. The Roman Catholic Church decided to bring Christianity to the native people, the Kumayaay. The first California Mission was founded by Father Junipero Serra in 1769. This unfortunately changed the Kumayaay way of life in the area forever. They were no longer permitted to hunt and live in their ancestral tribal villages. Instead they were forced in growing crops as in the European feudal Manor System. The essentially became serfs although Christian serfs. The Spanish unfortunately brought many diseases like smallpox that decimated the native population. The King of Spain granted land and called it "The Kings Ranch" or in Spanish "Rancho del Rey" which is now Chula Vista, National City, Bonita, Sunnyside and Sweetwater Valley. Of course the developers in the 1980's capitalized on this name and called a master planned community in Chula Vista, you guessed it, Rancho del Rey. When Mexico won its independence from Spain the area was renamed Rancho de la Nacion. The land was given by Governor Pio Pico to his son in law John Forster in 1845. After the victory over Mexico in the Mexican-American War in 1847 and California Statehood in 1850 the land grants remained in effect under American Law.
